Abbreviation for the Association of Democratic Scientists. Founded in Tokyo on January 12, 1946. A wide range of researchers, mainly Marxists, who had been deprived of academic freedom during the war, joined the association. Its first president was Ogura Kinnosuke. At the time of its founding, reflecting on its failure to prevent the war of aggression, the association aimed to "build democratic science" by "gathering the scientific desires of the people," "fighting against anti-democratic educational systems, policies, and ideologies," and "mobilizing science for the lives and culture of the people." It established committees in the fields of natural science, social science, and art, and published journals such as "Democratic Science," "Theory" (philosophy committee), and "Historical Review" (history committee).
