Vietnam's first long-term stable dynasty. 1009-1225. Vietnam gained independence from Chinese rule in the 10th century, but the country was unstable for half a century as the powers of the Qu, Ngo, Đinh, and Le clans rose and fell repeatedly. The founder of the Ly dynasty, Ly Cong Uan (Lī Gong-un, Emperor Taizu, reigned 1009-28), was born in Ha Bac Province and served the former Le dynasty (980-1009) as a commander in chief before the palace. After the death of Emperor Le Long Dinh, he became independent and took the throne, moving the capital from Hoa Lu to Thang Long. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
