Taboo edict - Bukkiryo

Japanese:
Taboo edict - Bukkiryo
This law stipulates the period of mourning for the death of a close relative. In many cases, it also includes provisions regarding the practice of impurity. The so-called "fukui-rei" (laws of mourning) were first created at Ise Shrine and other shrines in the Middle Ages, but they were basically a combination of the "fukui-rei" (laws of mourning and funerals) and the "keniyo-rei" (laws of temporary rest), which replaced the "ka" (time off for mourners) with "ki" (time of mourning) as a period of avoiding the impurity of death. Based on these, the Edo Shogunate enacted and promulgated the "fukui-rei" (laws of mourning) in 1684 (Jokyo 1) under the fifth shogun, Tokugawa Tsunayoshi, with the participation of Confucian scholars Hayashi Hoko, Kinoshita Junan, and Shintoist Yoshikawa Koretari, and after several revisions, it was finalized in 1736 (Genbun 1) (see table).
