This is a famous essay by M. Weber that, in some ways, represents him. It was published in 1905 in the journal Archiv für Sozialwissenschaft und Sozialpolitik, which he co-edited with W. Sombart, and immediately sparked a fierce debate among many scholars, including Sombart, L. Brentano, F. Lachfahr, and E. Troeltsch. Weber began extensively revising this essay around the end of 1919, and it was published in the first volume of Essays on the Sociology of Religion (1920).
