Born: January 5, 1887 in Hong Kong [Died] May 7, 1979, St. Ives British potter. He spent his childhood in Japan and studied at an art school in London, aiming to become a copperplate engraver. During his time at school, he was an avid reader of L. Hearn and was inspired by Japan, which led him to return to Japan in 1909. He opened a copperplate engraving school in Ueno, Tokyo, but after meeting Yanagi Muneyoshi and Tomimoto Kenkichi, he became interested in pottery and studied pottery under Miyagawa Kozan and Ogata Kenzan VI. From 1917 to 1919, he took over Kenzan's main kiln in Abiko, Chiba Prefecture, and began making pottery. In 1920, he returned to Japan with Hamada Shoji and built a Japanese-style climbing kiln in the fishing village of St. Ives in the southwest of England. In 1936, he moved to Dartington Hall, where he used it as his base to make pottery and teach the next generation. He also taught in Europe and America, supporting the activities of Western craftsmen and playing an important role in the flourishing of crafts. After World War II, he visited Japan many times, making a total of 21 visits, and held solo exhibitions of his works in folk kilns. He produced unique folk-style pottery that combined the traditions of Japanese and Korean pottery with the traditions of British pottery, and contributed to the Japanese folk art movement. In 1966, he was awarded the Order of the Sacred Treasure, Second Class. His main works include A Potter's Book (1940). reach |
