Born on April 9, 1812. A priest at Toga Shrine in Ichinomiya, Mikawa (Aichi Prefecture). Studied Confucianism under Yoshida Toudou and Japanese classics under Hirata Atsutane. In 1868, he became a servant at the Kyoto Imperial Academy, but died suddenly on June 21, 1869. He was 52 years old. His pen names were Sugino Kanedo and Sugimonshu.
