A deciduous shrub of the Solanaceae family. It often grows on river banks and is found in the tropical and temperate zones of East Asia. It grows several leaves in clusters and produces pale purple, five-petaled flowers about 1 cm in diameter in summer. The young leaves are edible and medicinal, and when cooked with rice, they are called "wolfberry rice." The dried leaves and root bark are also used as an antipyretic. The fruits are red and oval, and are crushed, placed in a silk bag, soaked in shochu, and then mixed with rock sugar and honey. The bag is sealed for about two weeks to make wolfberry wine, which is said to be effective in strengthening the body and promoting eternal youth and longevity.
