A Persian captain active in the late 10th century, author of Kitāb A'jāb al‐Hind (Wonders of India). Born in Ramhormuz on the Persian Gulf coast. Dates of birth and death unknown. Written in Arabic based on reports from Muslim merchants and sailors sailing from the Indian Ocean to the seas of China, the book contains 135 independent stories and miraculous tales. Some of these stories are considered to be the original form of the tales of Sindbad the Sailor in The Thousand and One Nights, and some are quite far-fetched, but they are highly suggestive in understanding the state of voyages at the time and the appearance of the islands of the Indian Ocean, the Arabian Peninsula, and eastern Africa.
