… Some say that it was only after the emergence of private property that the issue of legitimacy became an issue in relation to inheritance, but the example of the San, who have very little material assets to inherit, is strong evidence against this. Robert Briffault, who claims that in cases where a child is born and raised in the mother's clan, belongs to a matrilineal group, and inheritance follows the matrilineal line (i.e. a matrilineal/matrilineal society), all children are legitimate and the distinction between legitimate and illegitimate is not an issue, and B. Malinowski, who claims that even in such a society, the presence of a father is an essential condition for actual family life and for the child's full legal status (i.e. legitimacy), once argued that there was a debate between these two. However, there are many examples of matrilineal societies that do not agree with the former's argument, including the Trobriand Islands cited by Malinowski.
