Mutanabbi (English spelling) al-Mutanabbi

Mutanabbi (English spelling) al-Mutanabbi
Born: 915. Kufa, Iraq
Died August 965. Arab poet from Dayr al-Aql. His real name was Abū al-Tayyib Aḥmad ibn Ḥusain. Mutanabī was a nickname meaning "the man who calls himself a prophet." Born the son of a water carrier, he joined the nomads of the Syrian Desert at a young age and learned Arabic from his native land. He had a rare talent for poetry, an extraordinary memory, and a strong sense of pride in the superiority of the Southern Arabs. He participated in radical political and religious movements, and called himself a prophet. He spent a turbulent time in exile and imprisonment, but he also wrote excellent poetry and traveled to the courts of Syria, Egypt, Iraq, and other places. He eventually became a great poet and was admired by many, but also criticized by many. In his later years, he was welcomed into the court of the Buyid dynasty king Adud-ud-Daula in Shiraz, but on his way to Baghdad he was attacked by bandits and killed along with his son. After his death, he was recognized as one of the greatest poets ever born in the Arab world. He wrote a collection of poems called "Diwan" (a personal collection of poems).
