The second assistant priest will be present at Nyoi-ji Temple." ② During the Edo period, a minor official who belonged to a county magistrate or a daikan and was under their command, in charge of general civil affairs such as tax collection, construction, police, and trials. Their duties were no different from those of the tetsuki (handmaidens) who were subordinates to the same county magistrates and daikan, but whereas the tetsuki were vassals of the shogunate, they were recruited from the peasants. ※From the essay Oritaku Shiba no Ki (circa 1716): "This must be because there were some things that I did for the magistrate's office." ③ A minor official in the Edo Shogunate. 〘名〙① 人の代理をすること。また、その人。てがわり。※御堂関白記‐寛弘六年(1009)九月一一日「僧正奉仕御修善、手代僧進円不云案内」※満済准后日記‐正長二年(1429)七月一九日「於仙洞理覚院尊順僧正五大尊合行法勤修云々。如意寺准后為二手代一参住云々」② 江戸時代、郡代・代官に属し、その指揮をうけ、年貢徴収、普請、警察、裁判など民政一般をつかさどった小吏。同じ郡代・代官の下僚の手付(てつき)と職務内容は異ならないが、手付が幕臣であったのに対し、農民から採用された。※随筆・折たく柴の記(1716頃)中「御代官所の手代などいふものの、私にせし所あるが故なるべし」③ 江戸幕府の小吏。御蔵奉行、作事奉行、小普請奉行、林奉行、漆奉行、書替奉行、畳奉行、材木石奉行、闕所物奉行、川船改役、大坂破損奉行などに属し、雑役に従ったもの。※御触書寛保集成‐一八・正徳三年(1713)七月「諸組与力、同心、手代等明き有之節」④ 江戸時代、諸藩におかれた小吏。※梅津政景日記‐慶長一七年(1612)七月二三日「其切手・てたいの書付、川井嘉兵へに有」⑤ 商家で番頭と丁稚(でっち)との間に位する使用人。奉公して一〇年ぐらいでなった。※浮世草子・好色一代男(1682)一「宇治の茶師の手代(テタイ)めきて、かかる見る目は違はじ」⑥ 商業使用人の一つ。番頭とならんで、営業に関するある種類または特定の事項について代理権を有するもの。支配人と異なり営業全般について代理権は及ばない。現在では、ふつう部長、課長、出張所長などと呼ばれる。〔英和記簿法字類(1878)〕⑦ 江戸時代、劇場の仕切場(しきりば)に詰め、帳元の指揮をうけ会計事務をつかさどったもの。〔劇場新話(1804‐09頃)〕
