A general term for birds of the Irenidae family of passerines. These beautiful small forest birds are found in the Himalayas and southern China, as well as in the Philippines. They consist of 14 species in 3 genera. They are 12-24cm long. Birds in this family are closely related to the Bulbul and Cicada families, and have short legs compared to their bodies, and their tail feathers are not long. Their feather colors include black, yellow, yellow-green, green, and blue, and all species are bright and beautiful, as befits birds of tropical forests. Sexes differ somewhat in color, with females generally being less bright than males. They live in open forests and shrubs, and feed on a variety of berries, nectar, seeds, and insects.
