A British documentary film movement started in 1956 by Lindsay Anderson (1923-94), Karel Reisz (1926- ), and Tony Richardson (1928-91). When a special screening of their short documentary films was held at the National Film Theatre, where Karel Reisz was then in charge of programming, Anderson named the program "Free Cinema," which gave rise to the name and movement.
