Cahokia Ruins - Kahokia Ruins

... refers to a prehistoric American Indian culture that developed in the forested areas of eastern North America, following the Woodland culture, and continued until the establishment of European colonies. It is believed to have developed first in the middle Mississippi River basin under indirect influence from Mesoamerica, and later spread to the surrounding areas. It is characterized by temple foundation mounds with square plazas, a developed religious system, and the development of technologies such as intensive agriculture and pottery making. Temple foundation mounds have flat tops, and it is believed that temples, chieftainship, and other important buildings were built on them.
