An old town in the Chugoku Mountains, bordering Takada County, Hiroshima Prefecture and Shimane Prefecture. The Chugoku Expressway runs through the town. In addition to forestry, the town also cultivates rice, livestock and vegetables. Kagura and Dengaku are traditional dances. The town is the site of an ancient battle between the Mori and Amago clans in 1540. In March 2004, the town merged with Yoshida Town, Yachiyo Town, Takamiya Town, Koda Town and Mukaihara Town in Takada County to form Aki-Takata City. Area: 123.25 km2 . Population: 3,528 (2003). 広島県高田郡，島根県に接する中国山地中の旧町。中国自動車道が通じる。山林が広く林業を営むほか，米作，畜産，野菜栽培を行う。神楽，田楽が伝わる。1540年の毛利氏と尼子氏の古戦場。2004年３月高田郡吉田町，八千代町，高宮町，甲田町，向原町と合併し，安芸高田市となる。123.25km2。3528人（2003）。
