virilocal

...In contrast, in the case of cousin marriages and marriage residence rules, there are cases where they are compulsory, but there are also cases where there are no preferential rules that a certain method is preferable, or where there are no such rules but the result is that the statistical frequency is high. (Post-marriage) residence rules are related to where a married couple will live after marriage, and include (1) virilocal, where the husband lives with his parents' family or in their vicinity; (2) uxorilocal, where the wife lives with the wife's family; (3) ambilocal, where the husband or wife chooses whichever is more convenient; (4) neolocal, where the couple will live away from their respective natal homes; (5) avunculocal, where the husband lives with his maternal uncle; and (6) duolocal, where the husband and wife do not live together. In the past, (1) was also called patrilocal, (2) matrilocal, and (3) bilocal.
