Date of birth and death unknown. Painter of the Southern Song Dynasty in the 5th century. Born in Wu (Jiangsu Province). He served as a painter in the imperial court during the reign of Emperor Ming (465-472). In his "Luo of Ancient Paintings" by Xie He, a painting commentator from the Southern Qi Dynasty, he listed him as the greatest painter, commenting that "Painting has six principles, and few painters have mastered them, except for Lu Tanwei and Wei Xie." Although his works no longer exist, according to Zhang Yanyuan's "Records of Famous Paintings of All Ages" of the Tang Dynasty, he painted people, animals, and other subjects, and developed the loose lines of Gu Kaizhi to create continuous, unbroken "one-stroke paintings," with sharp, smooth, beautiful, and original lines, which earned him unparalleled fame.
