Daniel Barenboim

Israeli conductor and pianist. Born in Buenos Aires to Ukrainian Jewish parents. He first learned piano from his father. From the age of 10, he studied in Salzburg, Paris, and Rome, studying under Markevitch, E. Fischer, and Nadia Boulanger (1887-1979), among others, and began working as a pianist in the mid-1950s. He made his debut as a conductor in Israel in 1962, made a name for himself conducting the English Chamber Orchestra in London, and has guest-performed with orchestras around the world. He was music director of the Orchestre de Paris from 1975 to 1989. He became music director of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra in 1991, and has also served as general music director of the Berlin State Opera since 1992. He first came to Japan in 1966 (Showa 41).

He is one of the few musicians who have been able to play both piano and conducting, but since the late 1970s he has shifted his focus to conducting, and has acquired an almost inevitable wide repertoire, which he has further refined and developed into a man of deep expressiveness. In 1991 he published his autobiography, " A Life in Music." In 2002 he came to Japan with the Berlin State Opera, and gained acclaim for conducting the complete performance of Wagner's opera "The Ring of the Nibelung."

イスラエルの指揮者、ピアノ奏者。両親はユダヤ系ウクライナ人で、ブエノス・アイレスに生まれた。初め父にピアノを学ぶ。10歳のときからザルツブルク、パリ、ローマに留学、マルケビッチ、E・フィッシャー、N・ブーランジェNadia Boulanger（1887―1979）などに師事、1950年代なかばからピアノ奏者として活動。62年イスラエルで指揮者としてデビュー、ロンドンでイギリス室内管弦楽団を指揮して名をあげ、世界各地の管弦楽団に客演。75～89年パリ管弦楽団音楽監督。91年シカゴ交響楽団音楽監督に就任、あわせて92年からベルリン国立歌劇場音楽総監督も務めている。1966年（昭和41）初来日。

　ピアノと指揮を両立させてきた数少ない演奏家だが、1970年代後半からは指揮に重点を移し、可ならざるはなしといえるほど広いレパートリーをもち、それに磨きをかけ、深い表現力を具(そな)えるに至った。91年に自伝『A Life in Music』（邦訳『音楽に生きる』）を出版。2002年ベルリン国立歌劇場を率いて来日、ワーグナーの楽劇『ニーベルングの指環(ゆびわ)』全曲公演を指揮して評価を高めた。
