Israeli conductor and pianist. Born in Buenos Aires to Ukrainian Jewish parents. He first learned piano from his father. From the age of 10, he studied in Salzburg, Paris, and Rome, studying under Markevitch, E. Fischer, and Nadia Boulanger (1887-1979), among others, and began working as a pianist in the mid-1950s. He made his debut as a conductor in Israel in 1962, made a name for himself conducting the English Chamber Orchestra in London, and has guest-performed with orchestras around the world. He was music director of the Orchestre de Paris from 1975 to 1989. He became music director of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra in 1991, and has also served as general music director of the Berlin State Opera since 1992. He first came to Japan in 1966 (Showa 41). He is one of the few musicians who have been able to play both piano and conducting, but since the late 1970s he has shifted his focus to conducting, and has acquired an almost inevitable wide repertoire, which he has further refined and developed into a man of deep expressiveness. In 1991 he published his autobiography, " A Life in Music." In 2002 he came to Japan with the Berlin State Opera, and gained acclaim for conducting the complete performance of Wagner's opera "The Ring of the Nibelung."
