Septuagint - The Septuagint

Today, it is a collective term for the Greek translation of the Old Testament made between the mid-3rd century BC and the 2nd century AD. It is also called the Septuagint (meaning 70) and abbreviated as LXX. This is because the Epistle of Aristeas, a pseudepigrapha of the Old Testament, describes the circumstances of its creation, and states that the first Greek translation of the five books of the Old Testament (originally written in Hebrew) was made in 72 days by 72 elders sent from Palestine during the reign of Ptolemy II Philadelphus (reigned 283-247 BC). However, this legend remains a legend, and the name "Septuagint" is now used to mean the oldest Greek translation of not only the Pentateuch, but the entire Old Testament. It was used by the Christian church during its formative period. After the 2nd century AD, it was mainly copied and transmitted by the Christian church.

今日では紀元前3世紀中葉から紀元2世紀にわたってなされたギリシア語訳の『旧約聖書』を総称していう。「セプトゥアギンタ」Septuaginta（70の意）ともよばれ、LXXと略記する。これは『旧約偽典』の「アリステアスの手紙」がその成立事情を記し、プトレマイオス2世フィラデルフォス（在位前283～前247）の治世に、『旧約聖書』（原典はヘブル語）の5書の最初のギリシア語訳が、パレスチナから派遣された72人の長老により72日間でなされたとしたことによる。しかしこの伝説は伝説として、「七十人訳」の名称は、今日では五書にとどまらず、『旧約聖書』全体の最古のギリシア語訳の意に用いられている。キリスト教会がその形成期にこれを用いた。紀元2世紀以後はもっぱらキリスト教会で書写伝達された。
