Today, it is a collective term for the Greek translation of the Old Testament made between the mid-3rd century BC and the 2nd century AD. It is also called the Septuagint (meaning 70) and abbreviated as LXX. This is because the Epistle of Aristeas, a pseudepigrapha of the Old Testament, describes the circumstances of its creation, and states that the first Greek translation of the five books of the Old Testament (originally written in Hebrew) was made in 72 days by 72 elders sent from Palestine during the reign of Ptolemy II Philadelphus (reigned 283-247 BC). However, this legend remains a legend, and the name "Septuagint" is now used to mean the oldest Greek translation of not only the Pentateuch, but the entire Old Testament. It was used by the Christian church during its formative period. After the 2nd century AD, it was mainly copied and transmitted by the Christian church. 「セプトゥアギンタ」Septuaginta(70の意)ともよばれ、LXXと略記する。
