The term refers to the estuary of the rivers Derwent, Ouse, Wharfe, Don, and Trent that flow through the plains of Yorkdale in the eastern Pennines of the United Kingdom and join together to flow into the North Sea. Ocean-going ships can navigate up to 13 km upstream from the estuary. The ports of Hull and Grimsby are located on the riverbanks. In 1974, both sides of the river were integrated into the county of Humberside, and in 1981 the world's longest suspension bridge (1,410 m long between the central spans) was built between Hazel and Burton.
