A city in the southeastern tip of Iwate Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1955. It faces Hirota Bay and has had an open port since ancient times, with the Ofunato Line passing through it. It is one of the major bases for offshore and deep-sea fishing along the Sanriku coast, and oyster and scallop farming is also carried out. In addition to fruit trees and greenhouse horticulture, dairy farming is also thriving, producing dairy products. It is home to Tsubaki Island (a natural monument), a breeding ground for black-tailed gulls, and Takada Matsubara (a scenic spot), both of which are part of the Sanriku Fukko National Park. 岩手県南東端の市。1955年市制。広田湾に臨み,古くから港が開け,大船渡(おおふなと)線が通じる。三陸海岸有数の沖合・遠洋漁業根拠地で,カキ,ホタテの養殖も行われる。果樹,施設園芸のほか酪農も盛んで乳製品を産する。三陸復興国立公園に属するウミネコ繁殖地椿(つばき)島(天然記念物),高田松原(名勝)がある。東日本大震災で,市内において被害が発生。231.94km2。2万3300人(2010)。
