A city in the southeastern tip of Iwate Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1955. It faces Hirota Bay and has had an open port since ancient times, with the Ofunato Line passing through it. It is one of the major bases for offshore and deep-sea fishing along the Sanriku coast, and oyster and scallop farming is also carried out. In addition to fruit trees and greenhouse horticulture, dairy farming is also thriving, producing dairy products. It is home to Tsubaki Island (a natural monument), a breeding ground for black-tailed gulls, and Takada Matsubara (a scenic spot), both of which are part of the Sanriku Fukko National Park. The city suffered damage in the Great East Japan Earthquake. 231.94 km2 . 23,300 people (2010).
