A weedy perennial plant of the Juncaceae family (illustration) commonly found in marshes such as rice field ridges. It is found throughout Japan, and is also distributed in China, the Himalayas, and India. The stems are clumpy, flat, and 20-40 cm tall. The leaves are flat, folded at the midrib like those of an iris. It flowers from summer to autumn. The flowers gather to form a head and are arranged in a cyme. The tepals are lanceolate and green, with membranous and slightly transparent margins. There are three stamens and the ovary is three-lobed. 田のあぜなどの湿地に普通にみられるイグサ科の雑草的多年草(イラスト)。日本全土にみられ,さらに中国,ヒマラヤ,インドに分布する。茎は叢生(そうせい)し,扁平で高さ20~40cm。葉はアヤメの葉のように中肋から折りたたまれて扁平である。花期は夏~秋。花は集まって頭花を形成し,集散花序に配列する。花被片は披針形で緑色,辺縁部は膜質でやや透明である。おしべは3本,子房は3室。果実は蒴果(さくか)で長さ約4mm,先はやや急にとがる。
