Akaebi (English spelling) whiskered velvet shrimp

This edible shrimp belongs to the family Penaeidae, order Decapoda, class Crustacea, phylum Arthropoda. It is found from the Boso Peninsula to Kyushu, the South China Sea, Indonesian waters, and the east coast of Australia, and lives on sandy and muddy bottoms at depths of 5 to 30 meters in inland bays. It grows to about 10 centimeters in length, with a thick carapace with irregular depressions and dense short hairs. Its rostrum is straight and has 6 to 7 teeth on the upper edge. Along the rear edge of the cephalothorax is a sound organ with 18 to 25 small granules lined up. The peak spawning season is from July to August, and the hatched juvenile shrimp grow rapidly in June to July of the following year and die after spawning. It is not a luxury item, but is used as peeled shrimp. The closely related tiger shrimp M. acclivis is also caught as bycatch, but it can be distinguished by its redder spots than the red shrimp.
