French flute player. He studied under his father at the conservatory in his hometown of Marseille. He studied medicine at university but dropped out to study at the Paris Conservatoire. He made a name for himself by winning first place at the Geneva International Music Competition in 1947, and served as principal flute player at the Orchestre National de France and the Paris Opera, while also playing an active role in chamber music as a member of the Paris Baroque Ensemble and the French Wind Quintet. He eventually devoted himself to solo activities, making use of his brilliant style and outstanding performance technique, and his wide repertoire and diverse expressiveness had a major impact on the global flute world after World War II. He first visited Japan in 1964 (Showa 39), and made many visits thereafter, igniting the popularity of the flute in Japan.
