A perennial plant of the Scrophulariaceae family (APG classification: Scrophulariaceae). The stem is upright and grows to a height of about 1 meter, with swollen roots. The leaves are ovate and serrated. In summer, it produces long, slender racemes and produces many small yellow-green flowers. The corolla is urn-shaped. It has four stamens, one stamen, and one pistil. The capsule is ovate. It grows in slightly damp grasslands and is distributed in Honshu, Shikoku, and Kyushu west of the Kanto region, as well as Korea, Taiwan, and China. There are four other species of this genus that grow wild in Japan, including Hinano-Usutsubo and Oohino-Usutsubo. The name comes from the fact that the shape of the leaves resembles sesame.
