A quantity that can be expressed as a single real number if an appropriate unit is determined. It can be length, time, mass, energy, electric charge, etc. It is called this to distinguish it from vectors and tensors. Mathematically, the components of a vector change due to a linear transformation, but a scalar is a quantity that is invariant to all linear transformations and is equivalent to a 0th-order tensor. In vector space, an element of the coefficient field of a vector is called a scalar.
