This rock is called Klingstein in Germany, and was described by Werner as a rock that makes a sound when hit with a hammer [Werner: 1787]. It was later named phonolite [Klaproth: 1801]. The Greek word phone means sound. Phonolite is a fine-grained, noncrystalline rock containing nepheline, with sanidine or anorthoclase in the matrix, and sometimes as phenocrysts. Nepheline (and other feldspars) is abundant in the matrix, and often as phenocrysts. It also contains alkali pyroxenes (egilite) and alkali amphibole (barkevisite, catophorite, arfvedsonite, riebeckite). Sodalite group minerals are generally included. It is a volcanic rock whose chemical composition corresponds to nepheline syenite. Clinkstone [Cotta: 1862]. Source: Asakura Publishing Dictionary of Petrology Information |
