A town in western Gabon, in the central-west of Africa. Population 19,400 (2002 estimate). It is located 150 km southeast of Libreville, on the banks of the Ogooué River. It is known as the place where German doctor and thinker A. Schweitzer carried out missionary and medical activities from 1913 until his death (1965). It is home to his grave and the Schweitzer Peace Memorial Hospital, as well as a post office, bank, and other facilities.
