Industrial chemistry - kougyoukagaku (English spelling) industrial chemistry

A field of study that studies methods for chemically manufacturing industrial products from various raw materials. In the narrow sense, applied chemistry is sometimes used to mean the same thing as industrial chemistry.

To handle various chemical products industrially, raw materials must be supplied and processed on a large scale in factories. To proceed with this, i.e. to establish a chemical industry, results must first be achieved in the laboratory, followed by intermediate industrialization tests, and finally large-scale production. At this stage, the field that focuses primarily on the properties of the substances being handled and conducts chemical research on relatively small amounts of substances on a laboratory scale can be said to be industrial chemistry. In contrast, the field that deals with quantitative processing and even economic issues in order to industrialize the results at the later stage is called chemical engineering.

各種原料から化学的に工業製品を製造する方法に関して研究する学問分野。狭い意味での応用化学を工業化学と同じ意味に使うこともある。

　工業的に各種化学製品を取り扱うには、工場で大規模な原料の供給、処理をしなくてはならない。これを進めるため、すなわち化学工業を成立させるためには、まず実験室段階での成果があり、ついでこれから中間的な工業化試験を経て、最終的に大規模な生産が行われる。このとき、主として取り扱う物質の性質に注目し、実験室規模で比較的少量の物質について化学的に研究する分野が工業化学であるといえる。これに対し、このあとの段階で、それらの結果を工業化するために、量的な処理、さらには経済的な問題までも取り扱う分野は化学工学といわれる。
