[Born] Wanli 13 (1585) [Died] Kangxi 3 (1664) A painter of the Zhejiang School in China from the late Ming to the early Qing. He was from Qiantang (Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province). His pen name was Tian Shu, and his pen names were Chaosou, Dongguo Laonong, Shi Tou Tuo, etc. He was called the "general of the Zhejiang School" and is thought to have been a professional painter who mainly sold paintings in Hangzhou, but he was highly regarded by Dong Qichang and others, and was close to the literati of Hangzhou. He is thought to have been a member of the West Lake Poetry Society, so he has a strong character as a literati painter. He mainly painted landscapes, and is said to have imitated painters from both the northern and southern schools of the Tang, Song, and Yuan dynasties, following the customs of the contemporary Wu school, but his form and composition show a unique style, and the influence of the Zhejiang school can be seen. His son Lan Meng, and Meng's sons Lan Shen and Lan Tao all inherited the family tradition, and produced many followers, including Liu Du and Su Yi. His representative work is "Landscape Painting" (private). Source: Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia About Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia Information |
