1894‐1941 A leader of the Indonesian nationalist movement. A main street in Jakarta is named after him. Born in Batavia (now Jakarta), he served as a Batavia city council member in 1919, and in 1927 was appointed to the National Senate as the representative of Kaum Batawy (Batavia Association). He was a leader of moderate nationalist lines throughout the 1930s, and was active in the National Senate. In 1935, he participated in the founding of the Palindra (Greater Indonesia Party), and in 1939, he played a central role with Syarifuddin and others in the founding of Gapi (Indonesian Political Union).
