It is an evergreen coniferous tree of the genus Sugi in the family Cupressaceae. It is written in kanji as cedar and in English as "Japanses cedar". It is called various names such as Sugi, Akita cedar, Yoshino cedar, Yaku cedar (Satsuma cedar, Hon-Yaku cedar), Jindai cedar (Chajindai, Kurojindai), Tenryu cedar, Hita cedar, Obi cedar, Kasuga cedar, Tosa cedar (Uyanase cedar), and Kirishima cedar. It was once called Maki. The wood has straight grain and coarse texture. It is somewhat soft and not resistant to abrasion, but it is resistant to corrosion. It is prone to splitting vertically along the grain, is not very water resistant, has a distinctive smell, and is not oily. The quality of the wood varies greatly depending on whether it is natural or not, and is also greatly influenced by the growth process and place of origin. Wood with many fine, parallel lines when viewed from the straight grain has dense annual rings, is evaluated as a hard, uniform, and good wood, and is called "itomasa". Its uses are varied, from structural materials to furniture and floor pillars. Source: Renovation HomePro Renovation Glossary Information |
