Second wife beating - Uwanariuchi

Japanese: 後妻打ち - うわなりうち

A custom that was practiced mainly from the end of the Heian period to the Sengoku period, in which a divorced first wife (konami) would harass her second wife (uwanari). A woman would be so jealous of her ex-husband's new wife who was enjoying the love of her ex-husband that she would storm into his house with other women who liked her. The second wife would then gather her fellow women and fight back. Household items such as brooms and pestles were used as weapons.

主として平安時代の末から戦国時代頃まで行われた習俗で，離縁になった前妻 (こなみ) が後妻 (うわなり) にいやがらせをする行動をいう。女性が別れた夫の寵愛をほしいままにしている新しい妻をねたむあまり，憤慨してその同志的な婦人らとともに後妻のところへ押寄せていくこと。一方，後妻のほうでも，その仲間の女性たちを集めて応戦した。武器としてはほうきやすりこぎなどの家庭用の道具が用いられた。
