...The long epic poem Heliant, based on the Gospels, was written around 840 and is the oldest and most important work in Old Saxon.

After the second half of the 9th century, when the Frankish monarchy was divided and weakened, the independence of the tribes in the East Frankish Kingdom strengthened. Saxony was forced to fight on its own against the pressure of the Slavs from the east and the invasion of the Normans (North Germanic peoples) from the north. The Liudolfing family, who had power in Ostphalia, gradually emerged as a leader and eventually succeeded in establishing the position of dux (Herzog in German) over all the tribes.
