The remains of the Olmec culture are found in the tropical wetlands of Tabasco, Mexico. It flourished between 800 and 400 BC. It contains an earthen pyramid measuring 79m x 138m in base and 36m in height, as well as a plaza and the buildings surrounding it. Huge stone carvings such as megalithic heads, stone monuments and altars, and the fact that the stone materials were transported from over 100km away, indicate the existence of a powerful ruling class and an organized society. The town was abandoned around the 3rd century BC, leaving behind traces of destruction reminiscent of an invasion by foreign enemies.
