Also called lone pairs. An electron pair is formed when two electrons belonging to an atom occupy one of the outer electron orbitals of that atom, and are not shared with other atoms. Therefore, they are not involved in bonding. However, they can act as electron donors and form coordinate bonds with other ions or atoms. For example, the nitrogen atom of ammonia and the oxygen atom of water both have lone pairs of electrons, and they bond with an H + (proton) to form ammonium ions and hydronium ions. 孤立電子対ともいう。原子の外殻電子軌道の1つにその原子に属する2個の電子が対となって入ってつくられた電子対で,他の原子と共有されていない。したがって結合に関係しない。ただし電子供与体となって他のイオンや原子と配位結合をつくりうる。たとえばアンモニアの窒素原子や水の酸素原子はいずれも非共有電子対をもち,H+ (プロトン) と結合してアンモニウムイオンやヒドロニウムイオンをつくる。
