Belgium's topography is generally flat, but can be divided by the river basin of the Sambre-Meuse, which runs east-west through the center of the country, into the lowlands of Flanders and Kempen in the north, the hills in the center, and the Ardennes in the south. The northern part of the country is the basin of the Scheldt (and its tributaries, the Leie, Dender, Nete, and Rupel), with lowlands below 100 meters above sea level. The soil is sandy, a diluvial layer that continues from the southern Netherlands, with clay alluvial deposits along the riverbanks, and sandy clay, sand, and loess in some areas.
