Soviet director. A student of Meyerhold. Principal director of the Moscow Pushkin Theatre from 1960 and the Maly Theatre from 1970. His directing style is characterized by its clear style, which makes extensive use of music and incorporates elements of dance. His representative works include "The Power of Darkness" (1956), "The Virgin Earth Opened" (1964), "Dramatic Song - How Steel Was Tempered" (1971), "Bird of My Youth" (1972), and "Tsar Fyodor Ioannovich" (1973).
