…UP is the abbreviation for United Press Association, and was founded in 1907 by Edward Wyllis Scripps (1854-1926) as a Scripps-Howard-affiliated news agency. Because it was outside the framework of the prewar world division (the Triple Pact) by Reuters, Habas, and Wolff, it lacked both the quantity and quality of news compared to AP, which was affiliated with them. On the other hand, it expanded its field of activities with a free stance, and even in the UK it organized BUP (British United Press) to challenge Reuters. INS is the abbreviation for International News Service, and was founded in 1909 as a news agency for Hearst-affiliated newspapers. It grew rapidly around the time of the war, but it is said that it agreed to merge with UP because it fell into financial difficulties due to rising expenses and a lack of communication revenue. …
