This bird-hunting dog originated in England. Labrador is the name of the province of Newfoundland in eastern Canada, and the name was derived from the fact that fishermen imported dogs from this region to England in the early 19th century and bred them for improvement. They have a very gentle and patient temperament, and they love water and are particularly good at swimming, making them ideal as retrievers for waterfowl hunting. Although their fur is not very long, their undercoat is dense and rich in lipids, so that the skin does not get wet even if they work in the water all day, and they are also very resistant to the cold.

原産地がイギリスの鳥猟犬。ラブラドルはカナダ東部のニューファンドランド州の地名で，この地方のイヌを19世紀初期に漁師がイギリスへ移入し，育種改良したことからこの名称が生まれた。性格はきわめて穏和で忍耐強く，また水を好み水泳をとくに得意とし，水鳥猟のレトリーバーとして最適である。被毛はあまり長くないが，下毛は稠密（ちゆうみつ）で脂質に富み，終日水中で作業しても皮膚まで濡れることはなく，寒さにもひじょうに強い。
