The first Kamo Saio (Saiin). A Chinese poet of the Heian period. Second rank. Daughter of Emperor Saga and his wife Katano no Hime. In 810, at the age of four, she became the Saio of Kamo Shrine, founded by Emperor Saga, and spent her days serving the gods at Saiin in Murasakino, north of Kyoto. She excelled in poetry and prose from an early age, and in the spring of 823, when the Emperor visited the Saiin for a flower banquet, she presented him with a seven-character regulated poem, which impressed him, and he was given 100 households of land as a "fee for summoning literary figures," that is, as a fee for holding poetry gatherings and other events. This was the forerunner of the creation of literary salons at Saiin, which, combined with its proximity to the capital, should be noted. In 831, she retired from Saiin due to illness, and spent her later years in seclusion at Saga Nishi-sho. Her poems are included in Shoku Nihongi and Keikokushu. Her grave is said to be located to the west of Rakushisha in Saga, and is commonly known as Hime Myojin.
