1921‐ A representative poet of the first generation of Polish postwar poetry. Set against the backdrop of a devastated country, his poetry collections such as Anxiety (1947) use frank and innovative methods to question human existence and ethics. His keen observation of reality is also used in his satirical prose, and his short story A Visit to the Museum (1959) exposes the fabrication of the Auschwitz War Museum. After The Thaw, he became active as a writer of absurdist theatre, on a par with Mrozek.
