A representative poet of the first generation of Polish postwar poetry. Set against the backdrop of a devastated country, his poetry collections such as Anxiety (1947) use frank and innovative methods to question human existence and ethics. His keen observation of reality is also used in his satirical prose, and his short story A Visit to the Museum (1959) exposes the fabrication of the Auschwitz War Museum. After The Thaw, he became active as a writer of absurdist theatre, on a par with Mrozek. Other works include Index Cards (1960). [Nishi Shigehiko]

ポーランド戦後詩の第1世代を代表する詩人。荒廃した国土を背景に，率直で斬新な手法を用いて人間の実存と倫理を問いつめた詩集に《不安》(1947)などがある。現実観察の鋭さは風刺的な散文にも生かされ，短編《博物館見学》(1959)はアウシュビッツ戦争博物館の虚構をあばく。〈雪どけ〉後は，ムロジェクと並ぶ不条理演劇の作者としても活躍。ほかに《索引カード》(1960)などがある。【西成彦】
