One of the marginal seas of the Arctic Ocean. The western end of the area is Severnaya Zemlya, which is located on the Taymyr Peninsula in Russia and the area to the north, the eastern end is the Novosibirsk Islands, and the southern end is the northern coast of Siberia. It is connected to the Kara Sea in the west and the East Siberian Sea in the east. It was named after the Laptev brothers, who created a coastal map of this area. It has an area of about 710,000 ^km2 , an average depth of about 578 m, and a maximum depth of about 2,980 m. The area is shallow, with most of the sea being continental shelf. The Lena River, Khatanga River, Yana River, and other rivers flow into the area, so the salinity of the seawater is particularly low (20 to 25‰) along the coast, and it freezes over for 8 to 9 months. When the ice layer is excavated, the remains of many animals, including mammoths, from before the Ice Age can be found. In the eastern part of the area, very old remaining ice layers can be found under thin sediments. The ports are Chiksi near the mouth of the Lena River and Olenyok at the mouth of the Olenyok River.

北極海の縁海の一つ。ロシア，タイムイル半島とその北に続くセーベルナヤゼムリャーを西端，ノボシビルスキー諸島を東端に，シベリア北岸を南限とする海域。西部でカラ海と，東部で東シベリア海とつながる。この地の海岸地図を作成したラプテフ兄弟にちなんで命名された。面積約 71万 km²，平均深度約 578m，最高深度約 2980m。海域は大陸棚が大半を占めて浅い。レナ川，ハタンガ川，ヤナ川などが流入するため，沿岸部は特に海水の塩分濃度が低く (20～25‰) ，8～9ヵ月間結氷する。氷層を掘るとマンモスを含む氷河時代以前の多数の動物遺骸が発見できる。東部には薄い堆積物の下に非常に古い残存氷層が認められる。港はレナ川河口近くにチクシ，オレニョク川河口にオレニョクがある。
