Naive painters - peintres naïfs

Amateur painters who have not received formal art education and who create works on the side of their jobs are distinguished from professional painters. They are also called "modern primitive painters" or "Sunday painters." Such painters have probably existed in every era, but in the 20th century, French critic Wilhelm Uhde discovered the significance of their existence, and many naive painters were discovered and attracted attention in various countries. Since the second half of the 19th century, a sense of crisis has arisen in Europe about the collapse of Western civilization, and this has led to a growing desire for a primitive or naive world, and "naive painting," which seems to be free from all constraints, appeared fresh to people's eyes.

正規の美術教育を受けておらず，仕事のかたわら制作する素人画家のことで，職業画家とは区別される。〈現代のプリミティーフ画家〉〈日曜画家〉とも呼ばれる。このような画家はどの時代にも存在したであろうが，20世紀になってフランスの評論家ウーデWilhelm Uhdeによりその存在意義が見いだされたのをきっかけにして，各国で多くの素朴画家が発掘され，注目をあびるようになった。19世紀後半以来，ヨーロッパで西欧文明崩壊の危機感が生まれ，それにともないプリミティーフな世界，素朴(ナイーフ)な世界への希求が高まり，あらゆる制約から解き放たれたかにみえる〈素朴絵画〉が人々の目に新鮮なものとして映ったのである。
