A Russian female poet. Graduated from the Faculty of Letters at Leningrad University. She began writing poetry and children's literature around 1930, but was temporarily imprisoned in 1937 as a Trotskyist. During World War II, she was known for her long poem "Diary of February" (1942), which sang of Leningrad (St. Petersburg) under siege, and wrote the screenplay for "Leningrad Symphony" (1945). After "Thaw," she argued for the revival of lyric poetry as "self-confession," and sparked controversy with her tragic poem "Trust" (1954). After that, she continued to write the autobiographical lyric prose "Day Star" (1959), while also publishing lyric poems full of tragic tension. Her epic poem "Pervorossiysk" (1950) received the Stalin Prize.
