The notochord is a tissue located at the center of the embryo of protochordates and vertebrates that supports the body. In amphioxus, the notochord is present throughout life, in ascidians during the larval stage, and in vertebrates for a period during the embryonic stage, at the bottom of the neural tube, stretching back and forth and providing mechanical strength to the body. The primordium of the notochord is a group of cells that invaginate from the blastopore or Hensen's node and migrate forward along the midline of the embryo. A typical notochord is made up of a group of vacuolated cells surrounded by a connective tissue membrane. In vertebrate embryos, the notochord eventually changes into part of the vertebrae.
