Born: March 25, 1769 in Naples
Died August 10, 1821. Milan, Italy. Dancer and choreographer. Born into a family of dancers, he was the nephew of composer L. Boccherini. He made his debut in Rome playing a female role. Influenced by J. de Berval, he promoted the Ballet D'Accion and toured Europe with his wife M. Medina. He served as ballet master at La Scala in Milan from 1813 to 1821. He made a great contribution to the Italian ballet world by integrating expressive mime dance based on the personalities of the characters, replacing mime performed alongside dancing, and by introducing dramatic use of group dance. His students included C. Blasis. It is well known that Beethoven composed "The Creatures of Prometheus" (1801) for him.

イタリアの舞踊家，振付師。舞踊家の一家に生れ，また作曲家 L.ボッケリーニに甥にあたる。ローマで女役としてデビュー。 J.ドベルバルの影響を受けてバレエ・ダクシオンを推進し，妻の M.メディナとヨーロッパ各地を巡演した。 1813～21年ミラノのスカラ座でバレエ・マスターをつとめる。踊りとともに演じられるマイムに代えて，登場人物の性格に基づく表情豊かなマイム・ダンスとして統合し，また群舞の劇的用法を取入れるなど，イタリア・バレエ界に多大な貢献をした。門下に C.ブラシスらがいる。ベートーベンが彼のために『プロメテウスの創造物』 (1801) を作曲したのは有名。
