Around 1510-85 French Renaissance architect and architectural theorist. He was the ancestor of the du Cerceau family, a clan of architects active from the 16th to 18th centuries. He studied and researched classical architecture in Italy. After returning to Japan, he published a series of books on classical architecture based on the materials and sketches he had collected, but because he was a Protestant, he was not able to receive many design commissions. However, under the patronage of Louis XII's daughter, Renée de France, he continued his design and research, and published the book Les éminaires de l'architectures de France (1576-79). His eldest son, Baptiste Androuet du Cerceau (c. 1544-90), followed in his father's footsteps and worked as a court architect. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
