A bridge with girders suspended from cables stretched across both banks. It consists of two towers, two main cables suspended from the towers with anchors at both ends, and stiffening girders suspended from these by suspension cables. Suspension bridges are ideal for bridges with long spans, and the longest span in the world today is the Humber Bridge in the UK (1,410m). Representative suspension bridges in Japan include the Kanmon Bridge (total length 1,068m, central span 712m, completed in 1973) and the Minami Bisan Seto Bridge (opened in 1988, span 1,100m) on the Honshu-Shikoku Bridge, and the Akashi Kaikyo Bridge with a span of 1,991m was completed in 1998.

両岸にかけ渡したケーブルに桁(けた)をつった構造の橋。２本の支塔，両端をアンカーで固定して支塔にかけ渡した２本の主ケーブル，これにつりケーブルでつり下げた補剛桁からなる。つり橋は長大支間の橋に最適で，現在世界最長支間は英国のハンバー橋（1410m）。日本では関門橋（全長1068m，中央支間長712m，1973年完成），本州四国連絡橋の南備讃瀬戸大橋（1988年開通，支間長1100m）が代表的なつり橋で，1998年には支間長1991mの明石海峡大橋が完成した。
