A bridge with girders suspended from cables stretched across both banks. It consists of two towers, two main cables suspended from the towers with anchors at both ends, and stiffening girders suspended from these by suspension cables. Suspension bridges are ideal for bridges with long spans, and the longest span in the world today is the Humber Bridge in the UK (1,410m). Representative suspension bridges in Japan include the Kanmon Bridge (total length 1,068m, central span 712m, completed in 1973) and the Minami Bisan Seto Bridge (opened in 1988, span 1,100m) on the Honshu-Shikoku Bridge, and the Akashi Kaikyo Bridge with a span of 1,991m was completed in 1998. → Related topics Bridges Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
