The Zanju Rebellion

Japanese: ザンジュの乱 - ざんじゅのらん

A rebellion that took place in the Sawad region of southern Iraq between 869 and 883. It is commonly called this because many of the rebel soldiers were black slaves called zanj. In the Sawad region, irrigation, drainage, and surface salt removal are essential for agriculture, and large farms where slaves were employed to perform these tasks had been popular since the Sassanid period. Farm slaves were of various backgrounds, including Zanj from East Africa, Sudanese, and Maghreb people, but the Zanj were thought to have been the majority. The Zanj of Sawad are recorded to have rebelled twice before this rebellion during the Islamic period.

869‐883年にイラク南部のサワード地方で起こった反乱。反乱軍の兵士の多くがザンジュzanjと呼ばれた黒人奴隷であったため，一般にこう呼ばれる。サワード地方では，灌漑，排水，地表の塩分除去が農耕に不可欠で，その作業を奴隷にさせる大農場経営がササン朝時代から盛んであった。農場奴隷は東アフリカのザンジュやスーダン人，マグリブ人などさまざまであったが，ザンジュが最も多かったと考えられる。サワードのザンジュはイスラム時代になってからこの乱以前にも2度反乱を起こしたことが記録されている。
